(SMS) Studio Michael Schmitz
Cologne, Germany
Studio Michael Schmitz (SMS) works at the intersection of design, society and education to create sustainable, responsible communication. As an interdisciplinary studio, we believe in the transformative power of design. Together with partners from various fields, we develop projects that combine social relevance with design excellence. Our goal: to create a more sustainable world with a sense of purpose – through design that not only shapes but also assumes responsibility.
As part of Soli-Party we offer free design work in solidarity with projects, organizations, and initiatives dedicated to anti-fascism, equality, and universal human rights. Let’s talk!

What communication design can achieve today 10 years after publishing “Motivation+Aktion” – my B.A.-thesis about the possibilities for graphic design to intervene in the political sphere, today, I answer three questions out of the work: 1) Can we use our communication skills to draw attention to the rise of totalitarianism? 2) Can we mobilize people and thereby increase our influence on governments? 3) How can we keep history alive in our consciousness so that we can learn from our mistakes?

Solidarity isn’t a look, it’s a practice Solidarity in graphic design is less about style and more about relationships, power, and distribution. Here I recap some of the learnings from our first half year of the project Soliparty.
