The Americans I Met is a photographic and oral history project by Viktor Hübner, documenting chance encounters on a cross-country hitchhiking journey through the U.S. Equipped only with his camera, audio recorder, and minimal provisions, Hübner traveled through 41 states and over 16,000 miles from 2017 to 2019. He immersed himself in the practical and spiritual lives of the people he met, becoming a witness to their stories and the broader context of the Trump era. The book captures authentic voices, portraits, and human experiences, offering insight into American society in a transformative time.

The project emerged in a context of heightened political polarization, media distortion, and social fragmentation. Many voices and lived experiences are overlooked, simplified, or silenced in mainstream narratives. The challenge was to create a platform that respects nuance and human complexity without reducing stories to stereotypes.
Large-scale portraits of individuals in their environments to convey presence, context, and character.
First-person narratives collected in interviews to give voice to fears, hopes, conflicts, and everyday realities.
The photobook provoked reflections among readers and brought visibility to underrepresented experiences. It fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of social divides, and serves as a visual counterbalance to dominant media frames.
