The Backnumber is an editorial design experiment that explores how information becomes cultural knowledge. Inspired by Leon Wieseltier’s distinction between mere information and meaningful insight, our project for Hochschule Mainz’s Designlabor Gutenberg creates a dynamic, interconnected knowledge system—what we describe as a “knowledge-ping-pong game.” It visualizes data and narratives in a way that stimulates reflection and cultural positioning.

In a data-saturated world, design must go beyond presenting facts—it has to enable connections, interpretation, and cultural framing. The challenge was to transform static information into a participatory and visually compelling form of knowledge that encourages exploration and understanding.
We designed a structure that allows layered navigation and relational reading—turning facts into meaningful patterns.
A layout that supports non-linear reading paths, where visuals and text weave into a reflective experience.
The “knowledge-ping-pong game” metaphor guided how content interlinks, encouraging active engagement rather than passive consumption.
The Backnumber reimagines editorial design as an interactive knowledge tool. It challenges readers to move back and forth between data points, building their own cultural context. The result is a visually engaging platform where understanding emerges through design-mediated connections.
