Challenges
Designing the book cover for "I’m Not a Racist, But…" by Anette Dowideit, Editor-in-Chief of CORRECTIV’s investigative editorial team, presented the challenge of visually capturing the complexity of its subject matter. The book examines the challenges of migration and advocates for a fact-based, honest debate on integration, conflict, and social cohesion in our democracy. The goal of the design was to spark curiosity while reflecting the seriousness of the content—without resorting to clichés or perpetuating prejudices. The cover employs a clear, minimalist aesthetic, using typography and color to symbolize the tension between prejudice and enlightenment. The title is presented as a provocative thesis, inviting reflection and engagement.
Design Solutions
Typography:
A deliberate choice of font underscores the seriousness and urgency of the topic. The title is prominently and directly placed to immediately capture the viewer’s attention.
Imagery:
The cover avoids clichéd representations, instead using abstract, symbolic hand-script that leave room for interpretation, but visualize the urgency of the debate.
Outcome & Impact of Solidarity Design Work
In "I’m Not a Racist, But…", Anette Dowideit analyzes how entrenched positions, unproductive debates, and a drifting society shape the discussion on migration. The book is a call for a fact-based, solution-oriented engagement with one of the most pressing issues of our time. It targets readers who are willing to critically examine their own prejudices and societal narratives. This book is particularly important at a time when, for the first time since 1945, a party that is in some parts certainly far-right is on the verge of seizing power and assuming governmental responsibility in state parliaments in Germany.
